Differentiating partitions and hard drives
Invariably people confuse a computer partition and a computer hard drive. They are under the impression that these two things are one and the same. While they are often terms used synonymously a partition and a hard drive differ in that the partition is simply a section of a component located on a drive. Consider first at a drive on a computer is merely a location where a digital data storage device is located. That device can be anything from a 1 TB hard disk drive to a simple 1 GB USB flash drive.
Yet in either case that device can be divided into segments and those segments will be referred to as partitions. Hence when we attempt the task of partition recovery we are merely attempting to locate and restore all of the contents of a given segment of a drives device. In cases where an entire digital storage device has been reformatted we refer to this type of partition recovery as needing to undelete. Technically when a digital media device such as a USB flash drive or camera memory card is reformatted all of the old files on that device are deleted. We then use a data recovery program to undelete files lost during the process of reformatting a drive or partition.
