Funds available under UNESCO's Co-Action Programme

The Co-Action Programme has been raising contributions in favour of Project Five-0 for many years. The Programme was created in 1950 with the purpose of promoting UNESCO's ideals at the grass root level by supporting local initiatives. Its function is to raise funds for the projects by proposing them to mainly private funding sources. To receive financial support under the Co-Action Programme, a project must meet the following criteria:

  • compliance with UNESCO's key mandates (education, science, culture and communication)
  • equitable geographic distribution among world regions
  • the project's local support structure
  • availability of counterpart funding on the part of the project sponsor
  • previous achievements under the project, and
  • the project's long sustainability.

Even though funds have been raised for "Five-O" as such, the individual projects chosen by Five-0 must comply with the above criteria.

In respect of the criteria, the Co-Action Programme cannot accept to cover recurrent costs, such as salaries, rents, transports, and other fees. Exceptions can, however, be made in a few cases, for a well-established workshop or training course or even scholarships or salaries, if the total costs are modest compared to the overall budget, and if these activities are essential to the project.
